William McKenzie

CFI. Tailwheel Endorsement

William Mckenzie.jpg

William is a North Carolina native who now lives in Union City, Tennessee.  His aviation experience began in the Bahamas in late 2019 while on vacation and completing the final leg of the trip from Exuma to Long Island. On a charter flight in a small twin-engine plane between the two islands, the pilot asked if he wanted to sit up front in the right seat. He says the flight was truly a life changing experience as he got to briefly take the yoke under the guidance of the pilot. “What an awesome feeling that was, actually flying the plane. I was hooked!”

After returning home he located Takeoffs Inc. in Mayfield and started working on his Private in December 2019. Since that time he has earned his Instrument, Commercial, and Multi-Engine ratings, as well as the High-Performance, Complex, and Tailwheel endorsements. He most recently completed his CFI checkride in the very same Cessna 172 he completed his Private checkride in. He believes flying is one of the most amazing life experiences a person can do, and is happy to be able to provide safe flight training for aspiring pilots.

When asked about his teaching philosophy, William said: “I believe we can provide a safe and enjoyable environment to learn. Learning to fly takes passion, dedication, and a commitment. As an instructor, I believe we can incorporate safety not only into every lesson, but our daily lives as a whole. In doing this, we participate in a safety culture, coupled with flight training based on set FAA standards, and we have an excellent environment to learn and enjoy the gift of flight.”

His favorite aviation moment thus far is flying a Cessna 172 from Fort Myers, Florida (KFMY) to Marsh Harbour Bahamas (MYAM) and returning in the Fall of 2021. He says landing in the Bahamas as Pilot in Command was “pretty cool.” He says the flight was filled with beautiful views of the Caribbean and it was a great learning opportunity on the rules for international flying.

Williams dream aircraft is a Douglas DC-3 but enjoys flying in a taildragger and will be happy to help you get your endorsement if you’re wanting a different challenge.
